A Message From Our President

Hello all, my name is Karlin Frykas, and I am the President of the Agricultural Students Association. We are a group that has a long and proud history, not only on the University of Saskatchewan campus, but also across the Western Prairies. Our traditions make us unique among the other Ag colleges across Canada, and contribute to our ability to support our students, our community and the Ag industry as a whole. The Western Prairies have produced a salt-of-the-earth type of people who value integrity, hard work, fun, and determination, and our student body, both locals and peers from abroad, embodies those qualities. As Agros, we all bleed blue, and that is reflected in our members, as I know every single person who wears a blue jacket wears it with pride. I hope to see you all for a chat and a game of crib.

“Bleed Blue”

From Our Dean

The Agriculture Students’ Association (ASA) in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources is the heart of the student community in AgBio. Making new connections – both social and professional – is at the heart of what they do. From lounge hangouts to Lunch and Learns with our industry partners, from social events and sports teams to skill-building clubs, from study groups to Telemiracle Bed Push (and other great fundraising initiatives), there’s literally something for everyone. Importantly, the ASA executives are also your representatives on important committees at the college and university level. Take the time to get involved – the social networks you develop today are your professional networks for the rest of your career!

—Dr. Angela L. Bedard-Haughn

About A.S.A.

Our History

A Long-Standing Group of the U of S

The Agriculture Students’ Association (ASA) has a long-standing and deeply rooted history at the University of Saskatchewan. Founded in 1909, the ASA is one of the university’s earliest student groups, and for over a century, it has provided a strong and welcoming community for students in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources; one built on mentorship, involvement, and the kind of lifelong friendships, connections, and memories that define what it means to be an Agro. From its earliest years, the ASA has played a central role in shaping the identity and spirit of the college.

Many of the traditions that students know today reach back generations. The Senior Stick, first awarded in 1930, remains one of the most respected honours within the college, recognizing leadership, service, and commitment to the Agro community. The Trad Jacket, a defining symbol of Agro pride, has also stood the test of time. Its design, colours, and meaning have been passed down through decades of students who wear it with unmistakable recognition and camaraderie. These longstanding traditions connect today’s Agros to those who came before them, creating continuity from past to present.

Over the decades, the ASA has continued to grow and evolve, supporting students academically, socially, and professionally. From major college events and long-running celebrations to student advocacy and leadership opportunities, the ASA has remained at the heart of the AgBio student experience. Today, the ASA stands at the centre of the AgBio community, protecting the traditions that make us who we are, and creating new traditions that will shape the next generation of Agros.

Ag Cards

Every year, the Agros sell Membership Cards, or more commonly ‘Ag Cards’. They are one of our main revenue drivers. Funds from these cards are put back into the college for other events/programs. Every individual who buys an Ag card gets several perks, both in and out of the college.
